Most of us want that beautiful, sun-kissed, just-got-back-from-the-islands look, but don’t want to sacrifice the health of our skin to achieve it. I’ve tried self-tanning lotions in the past, but I’m just not patient enough to do it every day and I really don’t like the orange-y color they give me.
I’ve thought about getting a spray tan in the past but was afraid it wouldn’t look natural and that it would smell bad. Plus, I kept remembering the episode of Friends where Ross has a horrible experience in a spray tanning booth. It was such a funny episode, but I bet it kept a lot of people from getting one.
I recently heard about a spray tanning salon in South Philly called Baked that offers natural-looking, organic spray tans. And since I was heading to a wedding and didn’t want to look like the pasty white ghost that I was, I decided to give it a try.
The owner of Baked, Adrienne Ritchie greeted me when I came in and offered me a beverage. After filling out some paperwork, she took me downstairs for my first spray tan. I told her I just wanted to look a bit sun-kissed, not too dark. After stripping down to my undies, Adrienne (not a machine) sprayed the magic juice all over me. It only took a couple of minutes to spray it on and a few more to let it dry. When I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t believe how beautiful my skin looked. It looked like the perfect tan (which I haven’t had in over 20 years).
The tan only lasts about 7-10 days, but I got so many compliments that week that it was worth it. Since I can’t tell a lie, I ended up confessing that I had gotten a “fake” tan—but no one seemed to believe me.
